Chocolate Making

Chocolate making is a hobby that can be enjoyed by almost anyone. As a beginner it need not be an expensive pastime and does not require a vast amount of equipment to get started and achieve good results.

Basic chocolate making supplies are available from most cookery shops and some supermarkets, but if you choose to pursue this art in a bigger way, some of the equipment required will need to be obtained from specialist shops or online suppliers.

Chocolate comes in white, milk and plain, in a variety of grades, with Belgian generally accepted as the best. Milk chocolate 'Melting Buttons' are the product recommended for novices, as they are the easiest to work with.

Most tasks can be carried out using equipment you already have in your kitchen, but as your designs and styles become more intricate you may want to invest in some different types of chocolate and acquire some specialist equipment.

Some form of mould will be needed which can be simple paper cases through to the high-tech silicone variety, which are available in literally hundreds of shapes and sizes.

With some practice you will soon be moving on to filled and decorated chocolates and at this stage it is worth investing in some 'Chocolate Gloves' which prevent the chocolates being damaged or melting whilst they are being worked on.

Chocolate making is a very rewarding hobby, not just because you can very quickly be producing 'masterpieces' but mostly in the fact that they can be eaten – if you can bear to!
