If you like making cakes and you also like to work with fondant icing and would like to add extra designs, patterns and textures to your cakes then a useful piece of equipment would be an impression or texturing mat.

Cake impression mats are used to make a design, or pattern in the sides and the top of your cake. They can be used with gumpaste, fondant and buttercream and come in a range of different styles, including animal prints and shapes. Cake texturing mats are made of clear flexible plastic and are available in a range of textures, such as bricks and cobbles which are perfect if you are doing a cottage or path design.

The pattern or design goes right up the edges of the cake impression mats and the cake texturing mats so you can easily use them to cover a whole cake in the design or texture of your choice. Once you have the design or texture on your cake you can then dust or overpipe it with icing to embellish the design and make it stand out even more. The mats come in different sizes and can be cut to shape, if required.
