Moulds & Stencils

Cake making has always been a popular pastime, but today it has become a passion for some people. Whether you want to make a basic Victoria Sponge or aspire to a 'grand design', there are plenty of tools and equipment available to help the task along.

Cake moulds are mainly used for creating themed cakes, suitable for special occasions or to provide some humour. Moulds are traditionally made out of metal, but silicone varieties are growing in popularity, even with professional bakers. Novelty cake moulds are available in hundreds of shapes but if you are feeling adventurous, you could always cook a plain cake and sculpt it yourself.

Not to be confused with 'cookie cutters' used to shape dough, cake cutters are used by very experienced bakers to create and decorate special order cakes where there is not a suitable mould available. At this level cake making becomes something of an art form and specialist cake cutters are a vital part of the baker's toolbox.

Cake stencils are used to create the final piece of decoration for fancy or novelty fondant-iced cakes. There is an endless choice of designs available featuring anything you can imagine from cartoon characters to tiger stripes. Stencilling involves airbrushing the design onto the cake so it is a very time-consuming task and best left to experts. A less troublesome alternative to cake stencils is transfers, which are printed with edible ink and are fairly straightforward, if a little fiddly, to apply.
